How Singapore recycle its water ?

Written by Ankur Verma | Oct 8, 2021 10:00:00 AM

Huge water pumps which are installed deep underground at NE water Singapore helps transform sewage into clean water so that it is fit for human consumption while reducing ocean pollution.

Singapore, a Self-made country to fight water crises.

To power up self-sufficiency, the Singapore government has developed many advanced systems for treating wastewater including great water infra and high-tech processing plants.

Recycled wastewater from these plants can now meet almost 40%of Singapore's freshwater demand and this percentage to rise about 55 percent by 2060, according to the country's water agency.

These developed systems not only fulfilling the water demand of the people but also helping reduce maritime pollution, as a small amount of the treated water is discharged into the sea as well.

This is a lesson for those most other countries where almost 80 % of the wastewater flows back into the ecosystem without being treated or reused, according to UN estimates.

"Singapore lacks natural resources and it is limited in space, which is why we are always looking for ways to explore water sources and stretch our water supply," Low Pei Chin, chief engineer of the Public Utilities Board's water reclamation department.

A huge water infrastructure!

On the city's eastern coast, the high-tech Changi Water Reclamation Plant is actually called the heart of the recycling system.

It includes various parts and sites of the plants most of that is situated underground and few are as deep as 25 stories which is one of the masterpieces of core engineering capabilities, which is filled through a massive 48-kilometer (30-mile) tunnel, linked to sewers.

The site includes the network of steel pipes, tubes, SS Tanks, filtration systems, and other water processing machinery, which can treat up to 900 million liters (237 million US gallons) of wastewater a day which is enough to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool every 24 hours for a year.
