Water challenges in Singapore and methods used in sustaining water.

Written by Ankur Verma | Jul 7, 2020 10:27:47 AM

Singapore is one of the most water stressed countries in the world, the reason behind is that the country is totally dependent on annual rainfall as there are not many fresh water sources in the country along with very limited space is available for water storage.

Shortage of water in Singapore from its early times.

Form its independence the country faced quite a major water challenges and to meet the water supply demand constructed the reservoirs too. It was a time when Singapore already faced some heavy droughts in the 18 and 19 century, it already created the pressure on existing water stocks and it was a time to take appropriate actions to fight with the challenges.

In a very early stages country realized the value of rainwater and accordingly developed their water network and supply systems.

Major water reservoirs available in Singapore to full fill the daily fresh water demand in the country.

It became difficult for government to meet the supply needs after second world war, despite of having reservoirs and water schemes in Johor, it was difficult for government to manage the water supply. Singapore was importing water along with this government started to develop new water schemes in Johor to full fill the demand but the project was still under development and Singapore again hit by a heavy drought around 1960s. Due to this government had to fixed the water intake for each person along with the limited time of water supply.

A peak time for water awareness campaigns

After independence when situation remained same even after constructing the new reservoirs, a wave of water saving campaigns started in the country and government started educating people on water conservation and smart usage of water. In late 19s public places were full with awareness campaigns, radio broadcast and news papers everywhere there was only instructions to save water.

Solutions presented such as bathing no more than once a day, putting a brick in the toilet cistern, and using buckets instead of hoses when washing vehicles etc. Still Singapore is dealing with major water challenges.*
