Rainwater Harvesting: Key to Singapore's Water Security

Written by Ankur Verma | Sep 16, 2020 10:48:01 AM

Despite of not having a single natural water resource, Singapore is known for its well managed water management, distribution network and water technology.

Singapore is holding the top rank in water management and becoming a hydro hub because of its location (A densely populated city) an island lacking freshwater lakes. All credit goes to its public utilities agency as Singapore receives more than half of its water supply from sources like rainwater collection, desalinated water, recycled water etc. And today country is almost self-sufficient in water.

What are the best practices people of Singapore follow ? We will have discussion in today's blog.

1) Rainwater collection practice.

Although Singapore is having fresh water resources, treatment plants and fresh water reservoirs people of the country are well aware with the past of the country, thus follow rainwater harvesting practice on higher rate than other developing countries. Singapore is one of its kind in regard of new water technologies and very much concussion about the necessity of drinking water for Singaporeans. Country is constructing two new dams to save country by flooding and to provide uninterrupted fresh water supply.

2. Making Singapore a Hydro-hub

Singapore is expected to reach double of 430 million gallons of fresh water a day as a water demand by 2060. Country's national water agency is exploring the future possibilities to meet the water demand and following the path of sustainability by implementing three major thumb rules

  • To reuse water endlessly
  • To collect every drop of water
  • To desalinate more water
Companies from around the world are collaborating with the PUB (National Water Agency) to accomplish the dream of making Singapore a Hydro-hub. Beltecno (for storage fresh water in to stainless steel panel tanks) already working with Japanese government water bodies to supply water in its natural form in most of the cities of Japan.

3. What is sustainable water management

It is Singapore's goal to become self-sufficient in terms of fresh water availability, targeting all its water resources i.e. recycling, desalination plants and rainwater collection. To achieve this goal, country is working hard and now expanding its research and development capabilities by bring the global technologies all together for its ambitious plan for sustainable water management called ABC waters (Active, beautiful, clean).

Singapore’s public utilities agency PUB is renowned and already own the prestigious Stockholm Industry Water Award for its holistic approach of water resources management in country.
