50 years ago, Singapore had just two major water sources, According to the water agency PUB and Today the country has total four major water supply taps, which itself shows the progress in terms of water awareness and innovations involved because, it can easily be noticed in other countries where a significant  drop found in the water bodies. 

Now the people of the country have good, clean drinking water directly coming from the tap. How it all started ? The four national taps/ sources of water in Singapore are Imported water, Water from catchment, recycled water and desalinated water. 
How does a domestic water supply work in Singapore ?

1) Collected water from Rain also called Catchment water.

Rainwater is one of the strongest pillar of Singapore's sustainable water supply model, it is handled and supplied by using the latest innovative technologies from three major reservoirs Serangoon, Punggol and Marina. Alone Marina reservoir meet around 10% of city's water needs.

In last one decade water catchment area can be seen increased from half to two-thirds of total surface area of Singapore. 

2. Imported Water from Johor 

Singapore can draw 250 million gallons of water a day from Johor under the two bilateral agreement signed, Johor is one of the most reliable water supply source for Singapore and fulfill almost 60% of total water need of Singapore. In the recent news* last year said that the water level of Johor's Linggiu Reservoir that provides water to Singapore has fallen below 50 %.

3) Recycled water (Also known as NEWATER)

We have already covered the whole NEWATER technology of water purification in our previous blog, Singapore has total four numbers of  treatment plants in the country, which uses advanced filtration technologies such as  ultra-violet disinfection and membrane technology to clean water for drinking purpose. It covers 30% of total water need of Singapore. 

4) Water from desalination:

Desalination of water is one of the most advanced technologies in the water purification segment, where water from sea is converted into a drinking water, in Sep 2005 Singapore came up with its first desalination project in Tuas area.

It was the biggest ever desalination plant in Asia. It meet about 10% of water need of Singapore and produces around 30 million gallons of fresh drinking water a day. In SEP 2013 Singapore opened its second desalination plant which was larger and produces 70 million gallons of water in a day. These two plants can meet 25% of Sinaglore's current water need.
